In the heart of the Californian desert, the small military town of Twentynine Palms sits next to a large Marine base. Throughout the year, it receives young men returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Between leave and training, they kill time, either simply among their comrades or with their families, in surroundings somewhat reminiscent of the battlefront that they have recently left. The tedium of this day to day life reveals the difficulty that these men experience in returning to a life that will feel forever alien to them.

director : Lydie Wisshaupt-Claudel

Lydie Wisshaupt-Claudel has been living in Brussels since 2001. She trained as an editor at INSAS (Institut National Supérieur des Arts du Spectacle). In 2006, on leaving the academy she cut her teeth as a director with “Il y a encore de la lumière”, a solo travalogue shot in Iceland. An extended trip through the American West, a country with which she developed a fondness after having spent so much time there, provided a basis for "Side Roads" (2012) where, along with her boyfriend, she goes in search of American citizens wavering between faith and disenchantment and questioning myth in the face of reality.
She continually moves back and forth between directing and editing, in the firm belief that the two roles complement and enrich one another.
