Robert, an American, has come to Spain to fight on the side of the Republicans. He is tasked with blowing up a bridge held by the fascists. He is led into the mountains and to a small group of Republicans who are to assist him. Guerrilla leader Pablo not eager to attack and his wife Pilar takes command. Robert meets a young woman, Maria, whom Pilar has taken under her wing. A brief and glittering romance is to ensue between Maria and Robert.
