Synopsis

In 18th century Ireland, with his father dead, young Redmond Barry is yearning to climb the social ladder. In a duel, he eliminates his rival, a British officer in love with his cousin, but is then forced into exile…
He enrols in the British army and leaves to fight in the Seven Years War. He soon deserts and joins the Prussian army in order to escape the death penalty. Introduced into European high society, he succeeds in seducing the beautiful and wealthy Lady Lyndon…

“His film is a series of glorious scenes, serving to illustrate a storyline delivered by the voice of a narrator seemingly flicking through a picture book before our eyes. Such a radical approach it is that the star of the film is the narrative itself…” - Fréderic Strauss, Télérama
