Synopsis

A young woman goes to Charles de Gaulle Airport to pick up a military canteen. It contains the personal effects of Jean Péraud, a photojournalist who disappeared in Dien Bien Phu on 8 May 1954, as well as some of his photographs. Shortly afterwards, the young woman begins talking to some of Péraud’s former press colleagues. Questions relating to images of war that are still relevant today emerge from the memories and stories she sparks: Are reporters witnesses or fighters? Does their filming protect them from the effects of war or do they take more risks to provide an account? Can images created in the face of death be described as art?

DIRECTOR : LAURENT ROTH

As a scriptwriter, Laurent Roth has worked on many films, including feature films by Jean-Daniel Pollet, Peter Watkins, Vincent Dieutre, Dominique Cabrera and Fleur Albert. As an actor, he has appeared in films made by those in his circle, including Jean-Julien Chervier, Abdelkrim Bahloul and Mathieu Amalric. As a director, he was resolutely influenced by documentary fiction in his early films (Les Yeux brûlés, with Mireille Perrier, 1986, L’Impromptu de Jacques Copeau, 1993) before playing himself in tender and quirky stories, Une maison de famille (2004), J’ai quitté l’Aquitaine (2005) and Arc Arceaux Arcades (in production). As a playwright, he has written the librettos for the opera L’An Un and the oratorio Bar Iona by Jean-Christophe Marti, and since 2007 has been writing a trilogy for the theatre: Le Sein d’Abraham est plus vaste que tu n’imagines. Finally, as a critic, Laurent Roth has shared his passion for cinema through his articles (Cahiers du Cinéma), columns (France Culture), books (on Abbas Kiarostami and Chris Marker), and the festivals and film clubs he has run (International Documentary Festival Fictions du réel in Marseille and Ciné-citoyen in Paris).
